NBA Postseason

10:35 pm

There’s two things I’ve learned this postseason about the NBA: 1. Great defense can make even good opponents play terrible. 2. Great defense, or something else, is making the referees terrible.

I agree. The referees have been horrible throughout the playoffs. It’s so inconsistent from one night to the next depending on which crew is working the game. Sure, the NBA players are professionals, but having to react to the refs in addition to the team they are playing is rediculous. The NBA needs to enforce some standard on how the games will be called. It’s really taking away from the game itself.

Wow… looks like there’s at least one expert that thinks along the same lines about defense and the refs (see page 2):

But we’re headed in a dangerous direction and have been for 3-4 years now – at the highest level, the good defenses are too good, and smart teams (like the Pistons and Spurs) have figured out how to use bumping/bodying/clutching/grabbing to their advantage. So that puts the game in the hands of the referees, the vast majority of whom range from “mediocre” to “impossibly incompetent.” Other than the Phoenix games, this entire playoffs has been one long continuous foul/non-foul followed by someone complaining about what was/wasn’t called.
